All About Strawberries

Strawberries are one of the most widely consumed berries, but are not actually berries. In fact, strawberries are in a classification of their own call “accessories fruits” because their seeds are on the outside. Learn all about strawberries nutrition, how to store them, and our favorite strawberry recipes below.

Nutrition
Strawberries are a great source of vitamin C and manganese which aid in the repair and healing of body tissue and collagen. They are also rich in antioxidants which help prevent heart disease. Overall, strawberries, whether they be consumed raw or in jam form, are low in fat and high in water and carbohydrates. Not to mention, they taste great! On average, a single strawberry contains 32 calories and is mostly made of water.

How to store
Enjoy your strawberries, and general berries, longer by keeping them cold. The cold will help keep the mold away. The best way to store strawberries is unwashed in a breathable container in the fridge. When you’re ready to eat or cook with your strawberries, be sure to wash them and remove the stem.

Sweeten up your day with these delicious peanut butter bars.⠀

Ingredients:

1/2 cup butter

1 cup granulated sugar

3/4 cup brown sugar

1 egg

1 tsp vanilla

1 cup peanut butter

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 cup flour

1 cup oats

Instructions:

Cream butter and sugars together. Add vanilla and peanut butter. Mix all dry ingredients together. Spread on greased jelly roll pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 10 minutes (very lightly browned). Let cool for a few minutes, then spread with a thin layer of peanut butter (let the peanut butter melt before spreading). Frost with chocolate icing when cool.⠀

Chocolate Frosting:

1/4 cup margarine (softened)

2 tsp vanilla

1/4 cup milk

1/2 tsp salt

3 cups powdered sugar

2-3 tbsp cocoa

Place all ingredients in a mixing bowl and beat with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy.

Get your grill on this weekend with a perfect burger

It’s finally starting to warm up and you know what that means– grilling season! When you’re craving a giant, home-made juicy hamburger, look no further than our meat department. Our ground beef is the best. If you’re grilling up some burgers this week, remember to stop by and use these handy grilling tips:

It doesn’t need to be lean
For a juicy hamburger, select a higher fat percentage in your meat. (Don’t be afraid, most of the fat cooks off onto the grill.) This will only help prevent you from having a dry hamburger patty.

Make a large patty
Don’t be afraid to create a large-and-in-charge hamburger patty. Hamburger will always shrink once fully cooked on the grill so be generous.

Use seasonings
Use plenty of salt and pepper, as well as a nice beef seasoning. If you’d like advice on a savory hamburger seasoning, be sure to talk with one of our friendly butchers. They know what’s best and can give you plenty of suggestions!

Only flip your burger once
A grill master knows that the best hamburgers are only flipped once. Flipping your burgers too much will result in a loss of juice.

Don’t press your burger
Never press your hamburger patty with your spatula. As you squish your patty, the delicious juices that help make your hamburger scrumptious are falling into the grill.

Use a meat thermometer
Once your meat thermometer reads 160 and meat juices are clear, you are safe to take your patty off the grill and enjoy them with your family.

Strawberry Lime Ice Cream

No Churn Strawberry Ice Cream

If you’re screaming for ice cream, satisfy your cravings with this simple no churn strawberry ice cream recipe.

Ingredients:

1 gallon-size Simply Done® Plastic Bag

1 quart-size Simply Done® Plastic Bag

1 cup heavy whipping cream

1 tbs sugar

1 tbs lime juice

1/4 cup strawberries, mashed

1 gallon-sized bag full of ice

4 tbs rock salt

Instructions:

Add whipping cream, sugar, lime juice, and strawberries to quart size bag.

Add rock salt to gallon size bag.

Put quart-sized bag into gallon-sized bag and shake for 7-10 minutes until thick and creamy. Enjoy!

Strawberry Topping

Make this strawberry topping your jam. This recipe goes perfectly on everything from homemade ice cream to your favorite cheesecake.

Ingredients:

1 lb. strawberries

1/4 cup sugar

1 tbs lemon juice

Instructions:

Roughly chop and hull the strawberries and add them to a medium sauce pan. Add sugar and lemon juice.

Over medium high heat, bring the mixture to a simmer and let simmer for 30 minutes until thickened.

Serve immediately, or store in the fridge for up to 30 days.

Put a little zest in your step with this delicious and flavorful strawberry salsa. A sweet and spicy recipe that really packs a punch!

Ingredients:

Strawberries

Lime

Red onion

Jalapeno

Cilantro

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

Slice and hull strawberries to desired size. Slice remaining ingredients to help release flavor.

Add all sliced ingredients into a mixing bowl and gently stir together. Top with fresh squeezed lime. Salt and pepper to taste.

Keep refrigerated covered for up to 2 days.

Bacon is arguably the best addition to any meal. Dating back to 1500 BC, bacon is one of the world’s most enjoyed meats. With it’s salty and savory bite, it can be added to a variety of foods to enhance the flavor without having to add salt or drippings. Try adding bacon bits to your ground beef mix for the perfect burger, wrapping it around asparagus to mask the natural asparagus flavor, or add it into your carbonara for that perfect flavorful addition.

Layered Strawberry Shortcake

It’s National Strawberry Shortcake Day! Celebrate with this deluxe layered recipe that is nothing short of amazing. Sweetened strawberries and a warm rich dough come together for the perfect summer bite.

Filling Ingredients:

2 pints strawberries (rinsed, hulled, sliced)

1/3 cup sugar

Shortcake Ingredients:

3 cups all-purpose flour

Optional: 3 tablespoons sugar

4 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

6 tablespoons butter (cold)

5 tablespoons shortening (or use all butter)

1 cup milk

3 tablespoons butter (melted)

Garnish: whipped cream (sweetened with a little confectioners’ sugar if desired)

Instructions:

Prep strawberries in a large bowl by sprinkling them with 1/3 cup sugar. Cover and let stand for 1 hour before serving.

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.

Use a medium sized mixing bowl and combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a mixing bowl.

Add in shortening and the 6 tbsp of butter until the mixture reaches a fine crumb consistency. Then add milk and stir with a fork until the flour mixture is moistened.

Knead the dough on a floured surface until just soft enough. 3 to 5 times should do the trick.

Divide the dough into two portions. Place each in a 8 or 9 inch round cake pan and roll them out to fit. Brush the dough with melted butter.

Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until browned. Then brush each layer with more butter while it sits there warm.

Place one layer and top with sweetened bowl of strawberries and juice from sitting. Place the second layer and add more remaining strawberries. Top with whipped cream, and slice into your piece of heaven!

Ingredients:

4 cups Food Club® ketchup

1 cup apple cider vinegar

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 tbs. Worcestershire sauce

1 tbs. salt

1 tbs. pepper

1 tbs. garlic powder

Instructions:

Add all ingredients to a medium sauce pan over medium-high heat.

Bring mixture to a simmer and simmer for 5 minutes until thick. Store mixture in jar in fridge.
