Top 5 Sensational Soup Additions

Soup it Up this Season

Have you heard of adding chocolate to chili?

Is it nuts to add almonds to tomato soup?

What about coconut milk in your chicken noodle?

At our store, we’re souping it up this winter with tips, tricks and weekly deals to help you build a better bowl. Plus, we have all the sides to make your meal amazing.

Here are some of our favorites:

Chocolate Chili

Chocolate is added to chili for the same reason it is added to Mole’ sauce: it lends body, color, and flavor. A typical recipe calls for two squares of bittersweet chocolate or one to two tablespoons of cocoa powder. Either will give your chili a wonderful flavor boost. Chocolate can be added to almost any recipe including this one from Full Circle Market. http://fullcirclefoods.com/fc_recipes/turkey-chili/

Coconut Curry Chicken Noodle

Chicken noodle soup is a winter-time favorite that warms the heart and soul. Put a spin on the classic with coconut milk and curry. One to one and a half cans of coconut milk and two tablespoons of curry make for an absolutely delicious change up.

Sweet Potato Soup with Blackberry Sauce

Sweet potatoes are seeing a rise in popularity due to their health benefits and flavor. Blackberry sauce is the perfect complement to the silky, smooth taste of sweet potatoes. Simply stir in a spoonful to two to taste and your bowl will be ready to go.

Tomato Soup with Almonds

Almonds are the most popular nuts in the United States. A favorite of health nuts and fitness fanatics, almonds have become famous for their versatility and health benefits. The unique nutrient combination of almonds — plant-based protein, fiber and monounsaturated fats, plus key nutrients like vitamin E and magnesium — help make them a welcome addition to most diets. Adding a handful of sliced almonds to your favorite tomato soup will add texture, nutrients and flavor.

Green Pea Soup with Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is known for its calciumpotassiumprotein, zinc, and vitaminsB6 and B12. Adding a half cup of plain, low-fat Greek yogurt to green pea soup provides creaminess without the calories of heavy cream.

Leftover Lovers

Many leftovers make great additions to either homemade or store-bought soups. Rice, leftover vegetables, last-night’s pasta or leftover chicken, beef or pork can all add nutrients and flavor to your cold-weather classics.

Ramped-Up Ramen

Ramen noodles, yes, the college-student’s standby, has seen a satisfying resurgence of late. While there are dozens of ways to put a twist on ramen, one of our favorites is to add a sesame peanut sauce. As the noodles cook, put sesame oil, peanut butter, honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, and grated ginger in a bowl.  Relieve some stress by giving the mixture a good whisking until it becomes a smooth, consistent sauce. Mix it in the soup and you’ll cure your craving for takeout in a jiffy.

Ice Cream Soup

Okay, this might be a stretch, but hear us out. You know those last few spoonfuls of ice cream, the ones that typically signal the end of your splurge? Rather than go for another bowl, simply add freshly chopped frozen fruit for a frozen treat that can’t be beat. One of our favorites is raspberry lemonade sherbet from Red Button Vintage Creamery. It’s tart flavor partners with fruit add ins for a “soup” that truly satisfies. Here are some other flavors to consider http://www.redbuttoncreamery.com/ice-cream-flavor-list/
