Big Game Sunday

Super Bowl Sunday will be here before you know it! Did you know that 8 million pounds of guacamole and 14,500 tons of chips are consumed on Super Bowl Sunday?

If you’re hosting a big game party this year, we’ve created a checklist of things you don’t want to forget!

1.       Food

We don’t count calories on Thanksgiving, birthdays or Super Bowl Sunday! The importance of food at any big game party is one thing both men and women can agree on this Sunday. We don’t want to tell you exactly what to make this Sunday, but you can’t go wrong with burgers, wings, ribs, chips, salsa, guacamole, drinks, shakes and desserts.

2.       Environment

Grab festive banners, cutlery and napkins to help your visitors feel the excitement of the big game. Don’t be afraid to use plastic, you’ll thank us when it’s time for cleanup. Decorations, along with a big screen TV and plenty of couch space will secure your spot as the big game destination for years to come.

Remember – Many people watch the big game for the commercials in between the game, so don’t forget to keep it quiet during commercial breaks. Last year, it was estimated that more than 10 million people tuned into the game for the advertisements! If you need to talk, take it to the kitchen.

3.       Gamesmanship

When your guests arrive, have each individual fill out a game prediction sheet. Ask them who they think will win and what the final score will be. At the conclusion of the game, award the winner of the competition with a silly prize or trophy!

Macey’s Employee Spotlight-Shirlene Yamashiro

The February 2016 employee spotlight is on Shirlene Yamashiro, Assistant Front End Manager at Sandy Macey’s.

Shirlene has worked at the Sandy Macey’s for 15 years in numerous positions. She has worked as a cashier, Front End Supervisor, Store Trainer and is now the Assistant Front End Manager. Shirlene loves her job and it is evident to all that see her. She is always found with a big smile and a great attitude.

Shirlene loves people and loves to interact with her coworkers and Macey’s guests. She loves the team spirit at Macey’s, works hard to keep that spirit alive. Shirlene always goes above and beyond to help Macey’s guests. A few years ago Shirlene helped an elderly guest out to her car and after the groceries were loaded in the trunk they realized the lady’s keys were locked in the front seat. Shirlene was nice enough to crawl through the passthrough from the trunk to the back seat to rescue the keys.

“Shirlene is the greatest! She has the best customer service in the world and is the most positive and energetic person I know. We love Shirlene.”

– Janel Grangroth, Store Director

Shirlene’s favorite Macey’s branded item is the Kong Kone. However, a mama size is plenty for her. She also loves the fresh salsa from produce and the Macey’s potato chips with their great resealable bag. They all come at great prices so pick them up on your next trip to Macey’s.

Shirlene’s tip to shopping Macey’s: be sure to look at the ad, there are always great prices and when you are in the store ask a Team Member for help. Team Members are always there and happy to offer any assistance they can.

The Five “Ws” of Emergency Food Storage

Let’s approach the subject of emergency food storage by asking all the basic questions: Why? Who? What? How? When? and Where?

Okay . . . so that’s five “Ws” and one “H.” But who’s counting?

Macey’s and Augason Farms knows that in an uncertain world, having an emergency supply of food on hand can be very reassuring. You never know what tomorrow will bring. Daily news reports remind us how misfortunes such as earthquakes, hurricanes, flooding or even a job loss can strike anyone, anytime. When that happens, food and water can become scarce, or even nonexistent.

Upon listing basic needs, eating and drinking rank at the top. No one wants to go without either for very long. So, buy food and water storage for the same reason you buy insurance: It just makes good sense to be prepared.

You, of course. Since no one is immune to tragedy, each household should have a reserve supply . . . just in case. Whether you are single or part of a large family, this is good advice.

And we think the “who” you should turn to, the best choice for your storage is Augason Farms, a food storage leader with over 40 years of invaluable experience at producing delicious, long-lasting foods. Whether you’re an old hand at it or a newbie, Augason Farms has already thoughtfully developed and manufactured the products you need.

That’s up to you. Store what you like to eat; eat what you store. Struggling to subsist on unfamiliar food in an already trying crisis can only add to the stress. Eating familiar and preferred foods can have a reassuring effect.

Coincidentally, one of the strengths of Augason Farms products is that they can be used in everyday meal preparation. They’re that good. If the time should ever come when you need to eat exclusively from your stores, there will be little change in your diet.

If you’re on a budget, start by buying only a can or two a week. And when finances permit, add more. Start with perishable substitutes such as milk, butter powder, dried eggs and such. You can use those in your everyday cooking as well as holding them for emergencies.

You’ll find, as well, that Augason Farms is consistently less costly than competitors, saving you money.  Augason Farms also offers frequent promotions with additional discount pricing at participating Associated Food Stores.

There are two valid approaches to storing food: “do it yourself” or “buy it.” If you prefer the first, Augason Farms offers dozens of useful and delightful things you can’t make for yourself—things like powdered butter or dried egg mix. Or if you prefer the second method, there are complete kits and packs that make storing effortless. This means your emergency food will be ready when you need it, without the hassles of canning and the need for constant rotation.

Either way, Augason Farms has just the things you will need. Dehydrated or freeze dried foods have the longest shelf life—up to 30 years in some cases. And taste is never an issue with Augason Farms. As mentioned before, they have a long reputation for delicious, wholesome food.

There’s no time like the present. Decide how many people will be using the storage and for how long, then buy accordingly. For example, Augason Farms offers a 12-day food supply pail that makes a perfect 4-person, 72-hour grab ‘n’ go kit.

If your budget will allow, get a large, prepackaged kit or pack that fits your needs. If there are budgetary constraints, start modestly with enough food for a few days or weeks. In fact, Augason Farms has packs and pails that are tailor made for more modest budgets. Add when you can. But keep that ball rolling. Make a plan and stick with it.

There are two answers to that question. First, store food anywhere you might be. At home would be the first place. That’s where you would want an ample supply, sufficient for a prolonged event. Consider laying in supplies in the other venues in your life: a cabin, boat or even your car. Lives have been saved because someone thought to put a 72-hour or grab ‘n’ go survival kit where it was later needed.

Second, finding the right place to store your emergency food supply should be easy, though it requires some thought and research. A cool place, away from sunlight is best. Since space is at a premium in most homes, you may have to get creative. Some use the space under beds; others in closets. Still others set aside space in a shed, garage or a basement.

In fine, no one should be without some emergency food storage. And the very best comes from Augason Farms. They offer delicious peace of mind. Look for their fine products in the food storage aisle of your local Macey’s. Be wise. Start today.

You Say It’s Your Birthday

Birthday Balloons

Birthday parties aren’t just for kids. Admit it, we all like being the center of attention every once in a while. Let us help you throw a fun, stress-free party for any age.

First, figure out a date and time that not only works for you and the guest of honor, but a time that will most likely work well for the invited friends and family.

Next, determine a theme and budget to help you decide on invitations, a location, decorations, party favors and food. A formal invitation in the mail is a nice touch, but if you’re on a budget an email invite is perfectly acceptable. An outdoor party in the fresh air is delightful. To avoid unnecessary stress, make sure you have an indoor location as a back-up plan in case of bad weather.

Get creative with activities. Children love games. To keep them entertained, have more than one planned and keep them simple and short. Even food can be an activity for kids, like making individual pizza’s on half of a hamburger bun. For an adult, a “stroll down memory lane” works great. Before the party, have each guest tell you a memory about the guest of honor and compile them in a binder for all to read and reminisce about at the party. The submissions will get people talking and good conversation always makes for a great party.

Finally, don’t forget the cake and ice cream! Everyone likes a tasty dessert. Stop by our bakery department to pre-order a custom birthday cake that will go with the theme of the party and the personality of the individual that is turning another year older. Children love to pick out their own themed birthday cake. For adults, a photo cake (available at select locations) is a great way to personalize it and a fun picture is sure to spark more chatting.

Have fun planning and remember…great memories are a gift that last forever!
