Celebrate National Doughnut Day!

Doughnut lovers have been celebrating National Doughnut Day since 1938! The first Friday in June celebrates the work of the Salvation Army Doughnut Lassies who served doughnuts to soldiers stationed in France during WWI. Times were rough and moral was low, so Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance began to fry doughnuts in soldier’s helmets and handed them out with coffee. The first official National Doughnut Day was held in Chicago during the great depression to celebrate the Dough Lassies and raise money for struggling families. Today, the holiday continues as a fun excuse to eat our favorite bakery treat.

Everyone has their go-to doughnut variety, but for some, their favorite doughnut hasn’t even been made yet. This year we gave kids the chance to turn their doughnut dreams into reality with our Design a Doughnut contest. Check out some of the submissions. One lucky kid from each of our stores will have their doughnut made on June 2.

Get your grill on this weekend with a perfect burger

It’s finally starting to warm up and you know what that means– grilling season! When you’re craving a giant, home-made juicy hamburger, look no further than our meat department. Our fresh ground beef is Utah’s best, ground several times a day in the store so you always have the freshest beef possible. If you’re grilling up some burgers this week, remember to stop by and use these handy grilling tips:

It doesn’t need to be lean
For a juicy hamburger, select a higher fat percentage in your meat. (Don’t be afraid, most of the fat cooks off onto the grill.) This will only help prevent you from having a dry hamburger patty.

Make a large patty
Don’t be afraid to create a large-and-in-charge hamburger patty. Hamburger will always shrink once fully cooked on the grill so be generous.

Use seasonings
Use plenty of salt and pepper, as well as a nice beef seasoning. If you’d like advice on a savory hamburger seasoning, be sure to talk with one of our friendly butchers. They know what’s best and can give you plenty of suggestions!

Only flip your burger once
A grill master knows that the best hamburgers are only flipped once. Flipping your burgers too much will result in a loss of juice.

Don’t press your burger
Never press your hamburger patty with your spatula. As you squish your patty, the delicious juices that help make your hamburger scrumptious are falling into the grill.

Use a meat thermometer
Once your meat thermometer reads 160 and meat juices are clear, you are safe to take your patty off the grill and enjoy them with your family.

Take a look at our ad for this week’s specials and pick out the perfect meat for your barbecue. And remember that our experienced butchers are happy to assist you with whatever meat advice you need. From picking the perfect steak or selecting the best pot roast, our butchers have you covered.

Happy grilling and Happy Shopping!
