Heart Healthy Foods

As we all know, exercise is the best way to keep your heart healthy, but we are always looking to help our bodies out even more. Below are 5 foods that will help you keep a healthy heart while still enjoying what you eat.

  1. Avocados-Avocados get a bad rap for being “fatty” but in fact, their fat is good! It assists in lowering your bad cholesterol. Avocados can be used to put on crackers, toast, and many other foods in place of butter, or other fatty spreads. Click here for deals on this item!
  2. Salmon-Salmon is rich in omega-3’s which helps your blood flow. Blood flow is extremely important when it comes to heart health for obvious reasons. Keep your heart pumping while eating a delicious entree.
  3. Berries-Berries aren’t just delicious, they also help widen your arteries because of their high level of compounds. Whether you are adding them on top of oatmeal, mixing them in a smoothie, or just eating them plain, they will keep you feeling great! Click here to read about our local produce farmers.
  4. Whole Grains-Whole grains are a great source of dietary fiber. Including dietary fiber in your diet can help lower the risk of heart disease and lower blood cholesterol levels so next time you are picking up some bread, make sure to grab the whole grain bread to keep that heart healthy.
  5. Asparagus-Asparagus has about 5 calories per spear and is packed with benefits. It has fiber, vitamins, and so much more! Whether you are eating asparagus as the side to a fancy meal or as a snack during the day, your heart will thank you! Click here for deals on this item!

Happy Shopping

At Macey’s, Happy Shopping® isn’t just something we say, it’s something we live by. We want your grocery shopping experience to be happy and fun which is why throughout the years we have added some great products and features to our stores.

The Kong Kone is one of Macey’s most well-known items and was introduced in 1991 at the Orem location. It did so well in Orem that it was added to the other locations as they were remodeled or purchased. All locations now offer the delicious soft serve ice cream cone. The Kong Kone comes in many sizes with the ultimate size that reaches nearly one-foot-tall and is one of the most talked about treats for ice cream lovers everywhere.

Macey’s also features a scratch bakery. With famous doughnuts that are so good that they melt in your mouth. Macey’s has over 40 varieties of doughnuts ranging from traditional glazed doughnuts, to apple fritters and giant Kong doughnuts. To see all the delicious doughnuts we make take a look here.

In October 2015, Macey’s Anywhere, an online shopping service was added to the five Utah County stores. Macey’s Anywhere was well received in Utah County so it was added to the remaining seven stores in the first half of 2016. Macey’s Anywhere can truly make your life a little simpler by allowing you to shop anytime from anywhere. It’s happy shopping…online. To read a little more about why others enjoy Macey’s Anywhere visit Just Another Utah County Mom here.

All these things, plus our friendly team members and fantastic guests have made Macey’s the happy shopping destination to guests both young and old yesterday, today and in days to come.

Thanks for being a part of the Macey’s legacy!

It’s time for MDA Shamrocks!

Now through St. Patrick’s Day, when you buy a shamrock, you’ll help send a local child with neuromuscular disease to summer camp.

MDA’s summer camp is an exciting opportunity for Utah’s kids.  MDA Summer Camp offers a fun and safe outdoor experience, along with opportunities to engage in a variety of activities such as adaptive sports, arts and crafts, camp dances and much more. In addition to all of the fun and friendship it offers, MDA Summer Camp enables campers to stretch their comfort zones and grow in independence as they spend a week away from home and permit someone other than their parents to provide personal care. Sure, there’s an abundance of fun and games at camp, but if you talk to MDA campers, they’ll tell you the real benefits come in a much subtler form — the lifelong friendships, the increased self-esteem and confidence, and the chance to spend at least one week of the year in a place where physical disabilities are the norm rather than the exception.

When you purchase a shamrock icon, you’ll be helping Utah children with muscle disease go to summer camp.

Donate now through March 17.

For the Love of Food

This year for Valentine’s Day we wanted to talk about love… but not the love you may be thinking of this time of year. We mean the love of food! Food is life and one of the basic needs of survival. Food is a big part of our daily lives whether we realize it or not. Think about if for a minute… food is usually at the center of gatherings for both families and friends. Some of the most memorable moments in life usually involve food in one way or another. Whether it’s a delicately decorated wedding cake sitting quietly in the corner at your wedding reception or a beautifully basted turkey at the center of your Thanksgiving Day dining room table, food is always present. Food also gives us the ability to taste the world. Exotic flavors and dishes from distant lands allow us to momentarily escape to far off places, giving us a hint of what life is like in that land. Food can also be an escape from reality. When life gets stressful, a simple sweet treat can often heal the moment. Traditional comfort food can also stir memories in our minds as we drift back to days long gone. The various aromas and textures of the foods we eat can take us back to a time long gone… to those delicious dishes grandma used to make or that dad used to prepare on the grill.

We hope these simple words help you appreciate the role that food plays in our lives and that you continue to nourish a healthy love for food. As you prepare that next meal or as you sit down to eat take a moment to appreciate food. Take time to taste new dishes. Savor the flavors and enjoy the sweet smells. Don’t rush. Enjoy each bite. Add most importantly, don’t forget to add an extra dash of love in what you prepare for your families and friends. They will appreciate it and food is always better with love.

Where it all began

In 1947, Walt Macey and Dale A. Jones started the “Save-A-Nickel-Market” in Rose Park, Utah. Walt and Dale grew the business into a four-store operation and the stores were known for their personalized service and friendliness.

In 1963, the partners split and Walt kept one store in Rose Park, which he later renamed Macey’s. Walt went on to acquire some rival stores in Salt Lake Valley, and converted them into Macey’s. In 1973, he built his first 20,000-square-foot store called Macey’s Farmers Markets in Logan, and later, a 27,000-square-foot store in North Ogden. In 1976, he built a store at Carillon Square in Orem and later moved it to its current location at 800 North State Street.

Walt retired in 1985, and turned over management of the stores to his oldest son Ken, who with his wife, Robin, acquired his parents’ share of the business in 1987. Ken and Robin continued to grow the business by offering personalized service and genuine old-fashioned friendliness.

Ken sold the business to Associated Foods Stores in 1999. Since then Macey’s has continued to be a destination for thousands of Utah families looking for a great deal on groceries. Over the years additional Macey’s stores have been built or purchased. In 2002, the Macey’s in Pleasant Grove was built, 2007, the current store in Providence was built to replace the old store in Logan, in 2011, the Clinton and Lehi locations were purchased and in 2014, the Logan location was purchased. With all this growth, Macey’s now serves the communities of Logan, Providence, Ogden, Clinton, Tooele, West Jordan, Sandy, Lehi, Pleasant Grove, Orem, Provo and Spanish Fork.
